The Perfect Pairs blackjack side bet

prismic-img

Perfect Pairs is a side bet available on certain blackjack variants, which wins if the first 2 cards you receive form a pair. The bet is settled independently of the main hand and pays differently depending on the type of pair. The rarer the combination, the bigger the potential win.

What is the Perfect Pairs bet?

Perfect Pairs is an optional side bet in blackjack, placed separately from the main bet. You can add it or not on each round, without affecting how the base game plays out.

The bet is checked as soon as you receive the first 2 cards. If they have the same value, you win the Perfect Pairs bet. If not, you lose it. What happens afterwards doesn’t matter, neither your decision nor how the dealer plays.

If you’re not familiar with the basic rules of the game, we have a guide on how to play blackjack that covers everything you need to know before adding a side bet.

Perfect Pairs appears in both standard variants and live blackjack variants. It’s a bet separate from any other side bet the chosen variant might offer, and its rules are the same regardless of the format.

How does the Perfect Pairs bet work?

A round with the Perfect Pairs bet plays out exactly like classic blackjack, with one step added at the beginning.

  1. You place the bets: You put the main bet on the table. If you want, you also add the Perfect Pairs bet in the separate area indicated. The stake for the side bet is usually small, often capped at a fixed amount.
  2. You receive 2 cards: As soon as they’re visible, it’s checked whether they form a pair.
  3. The side bet is settled: If the cards have the same value, you win Perfect Pairs. If not, you lose it. Everything is decided before you play your hand.
  4. You play your hand normally: You take a card (hit), stop (stand), double or split, exactly as in classic blackjack.
  5. The dealer plays: Reveals the hidden card, draws cards by fixed rules, and the hands are compared.

The Perfect Pairs bet and the main blackjack hand are completely independent. You can win one and lose the other, in any combination.

On some variants, if the dealer gets a natural blackjack and the round ends before you play your hand, the Perfect Pairs bet is still paid if you won it. Check the rules of the variant you’re playing if you want to be sure of this detail.

Unlike Blackjack Super 7s, where the side bet tracks the 7 cards across up to 3 cards, Perfect Pairs is decided on the spot, from the first 2 cards, without depending on the later cards.

Pair types and payouts

In Perfect Pairs there are 3 types, in order of frequency and payouts:

  • Mixed Pair: 2 cards of the same value, of different colours. Example: 8 of clubs (black) and 8 of hearts (red). The most frequent type. Typical payout: 5:1 or 6:1.
  • Colored Pair: Same value and same colour, different suits. Example: 8 of hearts and 8 of diamonds (both red). Typical payout: 12:1 or 15:1.
  • Perfect Pair: 2 cards identical in value and suit. Example: 2 cards of the 8 of hearts. The rarest type, with the biggest payout. Typical payout: 25:1 or 30:1.

An 8 of clubs and an 8 of hearts are a mixed pair, because they’re different colours. An 8 of diamonds and an 8 of hearts are a coloured pair, both being red but of different suits. 2 cards of the 8 of hearts (coming from different decks) are the perfect pair.

On the variants available at an online casino, the payout table is shown right at the table, before you place the bet.

The house edge on Perfect Pairs

  • The main blackjack hand with basic strategy: roughly 0.5% house edge.
  • The Perfect Pairs bet, depending on the payout table and the number of decks: between 2% and 7%.
  • On games with 8 decks, the house edge can exceed 6-7%, depending on the payouts.

The more decks the game uses, the rarer a perfect pair becomes and the more the house edge rises. With 2 decks, the conditions are more favourable than with 6 or 8 decks.

A useful detail when you compare variants: some games pay 6:1 for the mixed pair instead of 5:1. A difference that seems small, but which lowers the house edge. The full payout table of the chosen variant tells you more than anything else.

If you want to test before staking from your own account, check the offers in the casino bonus section.

Tips for players

  • Play the main hand by basic strategy, regardless of what you bet on the side bet. Your decision to hit, stand or double shouldn’t be influenced by Perfect Pairs.
  • Treat the Perfect Pairs bet as an occasional option, not as a strategy for consistent winning.
  • Check the payout table and the number of decks of the variant before playing. These 2 elements directly determine the house edge.
  • Set aside a separate budget for side bets and don’t go past it. A small side bet, played occasionally, doesn’t greatly affect your session. A large or frequent one does.
  • Don’t chase the 25:1 or 30:1 win as a strategy. The perfect pair happens rarely, exactly as often as the probabilities say.

Before any gambling session, decide what amount you can afford to put toward the game and stop there. The minimum age for casino games at Slot.md, the only legally authorised online casino platform in Moldova, is 21.
